Melissa (she/her) deeply believes in applying the culture and teachings of yoga to bring to light the long standing disparities in wellness spaces. She is passionate about bringing yoga and Ayurveda back to its roots, and reclaiming representation within the wellness community. Originally from Munsee Lenape land (Queens, NY) she currently lives on Tsalaguwetiyi, S'atsoyaha and Shawandasse Tula land (Nashville, TN) where she works to make yoga accessible through yoga therapy, mentoring yoga teachers, and mantra. Melissa also utilizes her background in public health to integrate yoga into schools and clinical settings. She has been practicing yoga since she was a child, thanks to her mother, and has been studying it deeply since the age of 18. Melissa firmly believes in continuously adapting the practice to the individual as they move through human experiences. Melissa has had asthma since she was 2 years old, and has seen firsthand the positive effects that yoga and pranayama can have not only on chronic illnesses, but how we perceive the world.

Currently, Melissa works individually with clients offering yoga therapy in the Viniyoga tradition. She offers weekly community chanting classes, as well as pranayama classes for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). Her offerings focus on how to tune into our true self and dharma (calling, purpose) when it comes to taking action toward what we believe in. She also works as the Program Director at Wellemental, an app-based company that strives to create inclusive spaces for kids to breathe through BIPOC-centered practices. When Melissa isn't teaching, she loves to practice singing, bike ride, and experiment with Ayurvedic cooking! You can find her classes and 1:1 offerings at www.findyourbreath.net or connect with her on IG at @findyourbreath.

As you deepen your yoga practice, you don't ascend from this world. You become more of this world. And you can more clearly see the injustices in the world you live in, and better understand your role in taking action. - Melissa Shah

Retreat Specialties

They focus on yoga therapy, mantra, breath-centered yoga practices and Ayurveda. We not only focus on doing yoga practices, but reflection, journaling and honoring the land we practice on.

Teaching Specialties

How to adapt yoga practices to their individual bodies and minds. They can expect to learn how to lead every movement (and thus life) with the breath and how to nurture the breath so it is long and smooth. They can also expect practices that work to decolonize yoga and dismantle how it has been diluted and stripped of its roots in the West.

What are your favorite Retreat Venues around the world

Seven Springs Retreat Center in Maryville, TN. It's a gorgeous center nestled in the mountains and run by a young couple and their family. Their onsite chef is incredible and was like a nurturing maternal figure for the whole group, which also supported me when I was tired or nervous.

What's your personal definition of what it means to thrive?

To be connected to your self, to understand your tendencies and when you are out of balance, to know how to use the tools you have to bring you back to balance. To know that your identities and roles you play in your life are significant, but not all that you are or who you really are - when we are connected to our true selves, we have a clearer perspective of the world around us.

Who do you look up to ? Who has helped you the most along your teacher / retreat leader journey?

All of my teachers have helped me grow into the teacher I am and continue to be. My mother, Nayna Shah, my first teachers Sudhir and Niru Parikh, Saul David Raye, Chase Bossart, Dolphi Wertenbaker, Shobhana Srinivasan (my mantra teacher). Everyone has played a different role in supporting me and how I facilitate experiences for people.
