Hi, I am Maria. I teach yoga, meditation, and radical self-care. I have a most adorable kitten. I wake up to the gorgeous turquoise blue of the Caribbean. I play the piano. I scuba dive. And I am utterly content with my life. Every single day.

My lifestyle hasn’t always sounded so tranquil. Once upon a time, I was a high power executive at a mutual fund consulting firm in Manhattan, my day planner perpetually overstuffed with business events and social commitments. Truth be told, I really loved this whirlpool of intense energy… until sudden and severe migraines shredded my life to pieces, eventually making me quit my job of 12 years and set off on a quest for a cure.

This journey eventually brought me to Cozumel, a Mexican island in the Caribbean, abundant with the sun, scuba dive shops, and — randomly — migraine treatments that even my neurologist in NYC had never heard of. Guided by necessity and intuition, I’ve learnt to arrange my life in such a way that allows me to live fully and productively even with periodic bouts of excruciating pain.

What are your favorite Retreat Venues around the world

Suites Turquesa in Cozumel, Mexico - this is my go-to retreat spot because of its convenient location right on the oceanfront and at the same time a walking distance from town, plus every guest gets their own room facing the ocean which ensures plenty of personal space when needed. It is also one of the best snorkeling and sunset watching spots in Cozumel. Win-win-win.

What's your personal definition of what it means to thrive?

To give yourself permission to be yourself

Who do you look up to ? Who has helped you the most along your teacher / retreat leader journey?

My favorite mindfulness & yoga teachers: Tara Brach for the gift of radical acceptance, Susie Hately and Leslie Kaminoff for deepening my understanding of yoga anatomy and therapeutic approach, Judith Lasater and Jillian Pransky for the discovery of restorative yoga which became my favorite style over the past years.
