Born in the UK and raised in Canada, Shayla was an inquisitive explorer and seeker from a young age. Full of questions about the nature of existence that no one could answer, she found herself drawn to outdoor adventures, art and creativity, and esoteric pursuits like Vedic Astrology, Ayurveda and meditation.

Over time though, she slipped into the conundrum of conventional life with a corporate job, following the norms around her and burying existential questions to the back of her mind.

Finally re-inspired after reading “Autobiography of a Yogi” and realizing that humans have much more potential than we’re bred to believe, she decided to leave her limiting lifestyle and embark on a long inner journey.

In 2009, she sold her home and worldly possessions and took off on a solo trek to India, hoping to tap into the deeper dimensions of life.

After taking various styles of yoga and meditation, and Ayurvedic courses in India for a few years with her husband (who she met in an Ashram in 2010), she was fortunate enough to come across the wisdom of self-realized yogi and mystic, Sadhguru (while on a side-trip to Uganda). That was in 2012 and that’s when her deeper transformation truly started to take shape.

After spending long periods of time at the Isha Yoga Center between 2012 and 2014, taking various courses, volunteering and experiencing many blissful moments, internal changes, and deep levels of transformation, Shayla realized she had to share these amazing tools with others.

In 2015, she had the life-changing opportunity to train to become an Isha Classical Hatha Yoga Teacher through their six-month Teacher Training Program (1750 hours). Since then, she has been able to share these powerful well-being tools with so many others, and see them transform, break limitations and experience deeper dimensions of life as well.

Since 2015, Shayla has been teaching mainly in various cities around the UK but has also taught in Ireland, Switzerland and Canada. She is currently based in Athens, Greece and teaches both private and group classes there as well.

Shayla is the Editor for Align – an online yoga magazine produced by the Isha Hatha Yoga School as a resource to learn more about the science of yoga. In 2016, she was part of Sabras Radio’s Wellbeing Show in the UK, speaking about yoga and wellness to a wider audience.

You can also catch Shayla as part of a panel of key speakers in a talk titled “Yoga: The Real Deal”, which was aimed at exploring the ancient science of yoga and its relevance in the modern world. The talk appeared in 3 parts during the week leading up the International Day of Yoga 2020.
This is a video about the Isha Hatha Yoga Teacher Training - a powerful 21-week program. I am sharing this video as it's a great overview of the power of the yoga that I am privileged to be able to teach.

Blessed are the flexible for they shall never be bent out of shape. In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Teaching Specialties

"A transmission and offering of Isha Classical Hatha Yoga as taught to me under the tutelage of Sadhguru, a self-realized yogi, mystic and visionary Humanitarian. When I conduct workshops, I am always humbled by the impact of the practices and the changes students experience as they learn this ancient technology. I simply offer myself for others to imbibe these powerful practices to transform their lives. I consider myself a lifelong student and aspiring Yogi more than a teacher. What I love most about teaching is the immense learning I get from all the amazing people that attend my workshops.

What are your favorite Retreat Venues around the world

Isha Yoga Centre in India: My absolute favourite place to retreat each year. I've spent long periods of time in this consecrated space, nestled at the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains in South India, learning the ancient science of yoga, meditation and kriyas. It is a huge, thriving Ashram with a large community of full-time volunteers/residents, two schools, and many ongoing programs for self-transformation.

What's your personal definition of what it means to thrive?

To align with the Divine: To experience the larger creative force that is in each of us, and to surrender to that force to direct my life is what makes me flourish. Essentially, I thrive when I get out of my own way and allow the deeper dimension of creation to work through me to serve others.

Who do you look up to ? Who has helped you the most along your teacher / retreat leader journey?

1) Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev) - Yogi, Mystic, Visionary Humanitarian and founder of the Isha Foundation. Sadhguru is the most alive person I have ever met! The work he does in the world is beyond inspiring, he has completely given his life to helping others and the planet. The tools and technologies he offers to the world are rooted in the ancient science and wisdom of yoga. They have changed my life the most, and now allow me to also help others. 2) Osho, Spiritual Master: He was an inspiration in my earlier years on this journey. I read a lot of his books and experienced some powerful meditations. Osho is a master of words and really shines a new light on everything. 3) Dr. Deepak Chopra: I have learned so much from Dr. Chopra in many areas - mainly about the field of all possibilities, about metaphysics, Ayurveda and the power of attention and intention. I continue to learn so much from him. 4) Dr Joe Dispenza: I have recently been very inspired by Dr Joe's work. He lives from a place of alignment with the Divine, and at the same time really looks at the science behind the metaphysical and mystical dimensions. His story of self-healing is a true inspiration, and what the methods he offers in his workshops and classes is really powerful.
