Susan Horning, BBA, CHT, ERYT
Founder of Unity Yoga (www.UnityYoga.ca) in Vancouver, BC, Susan is a devoted practitioner of yoga, teacher, herbalist, counsellor, and Thai masseuse. She has a passion for community building, and sees yoga as a foundation for healthy and holistic living. Her background includes certificate training in Ashtanga and Anusara traditions, as well as teacher-trainer level Acroyoga and Thai Massage. She teaches inspired classes for partners and encourages people to look beyond their own mat toward one another, where the practice of yoga becomes a practice of cultivating healthy relationships.

Insight yoga and meditation inspire her personal practice, and sharing the gifts of silent reflection in her classes is always an integral part of her offerings. She believes in the natural wisdom that arrives in the mind when it is quiet, still, and open, and sees that this as the roots of a strong practice.

In addition to her public classes and private sessions, Susan offers retreats locally and around the world, offering her skills as a guide, teacher and mentor to her many friends and community members (Unityretreats.ca). She works privately as a Clinical Herbalist and runs a small herbal tea and consultation company (UnityHerbals.ca). Committed to teaching in a practical yet traditional format, she allows the wisdom of the practice to guide her and her students to a deeper understanding of the true meaning of yoga.

Susan is committed to personal development and her ongoing learning qualifies her as a teacher. She has studied with master teachers in the subjects of classical Feng Shui, Bazi Astrology, Thai Yoga Massage as well as a 4-year Clinical Herbal Therapy program at Dominion College in Vancouver. She holds a bachelors degree in Business from Simon Fraser University and numerous certifications and achievements from a variety of training modalities and disciplines.

What are your favorite Retreat Venues around the world

Mao Meno Resort, Lombok - my favourite because of the beautiful island setting away from all the hustle and bustle!

What's your personal definition of what it means to thrive?

I thrive when I remember that I'm not trying to win, especially not at the expense of the animal or plant kingdom. I keep a collaborative mindset to help me to always bring out the best in those around me, and when that happens, we all thrive. I believe that in order to truly succeed, we must make sure that those around us do as well and we can do it through a shared vision, one of unity and connectedness.

Who do you look up to ? Who has helped you the most along your teacher / retreat leader journey?

My retreat partners! I always run my retreats with a co-lead, and this has been the best experience on my retreat journey. Planning, coordination, communication and program development are all so much more powerful and exciting when they are created with a partner. We are able to balance out our strengths and weaknesses and truly work together to create something uniquely balanced with our skillset. True friendship always inspires my heart, and I am proud of the long term successful relationships that I've built with my partners over years of hard work, successes and a few small failures too!
